Warning to ITDN Members (posted 09/10/09)

We have been advised by an ITDN Member of a scam. The Member was contacted this week by a person claiming to have a taxi company. The taxi company ordered 20 tyres and said they would send a courier firm to collect the tyres. They gave credit card details over the phone and it turned out this card was stolen. The next day the taxi firm rang again and ordered 20 tyres and tried using another stolen card.

It is always advisable to get customers to come into depot to pay and not to accept card numbers over the telephone.

When the address of the taxi firm was checked it turned out to be an empty unit. The Member concerned fortunately did not lose any stock as they followed their company procedures but please be careful and be aware this could happen to you. Apparently, some wholesalers are aware of this scam.
